Baptism

What is Baptism?
Baptism is a public declaration of faith, a way for us to show others and God that we follow the Christian faith, and believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who died and rose again for all who believe in Him. Baptism symbolises being born again and receiving the gift of everlasting life.
Why do we get baptised?
There are many reasons why we get baptised. Here’s a few:
-
Jesus was baptised- in the gospels, we see Jesus being baptised in the River Jordan by John the Baptist
-
Jesus tells us to baptise - some of Jesus’ last words on earth, after he had risen from the dead and before going back to heaven, He commissioned His disciples then and now to ‘go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and the Holy Spirit’ (Matthew 28).
-
It is a public act, showing people we are disciples of God, and we are not ashamed of it
-
It symbolises being born again, and is a powerful reminder of what Jesus did for us through the cross and resurrection.
What does baptism look like?
At HBC, baptism is by full immersion into water, which occurs after sharing our personal story of what Jesus has done in our life (our testimony) and declaring our faith.
